Government Policy
The Queensland government has sought to regulate traditional Chinese medicine practice. At present there is no system or requirement for the accreditation of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. However, the Queensland government has noted that the formation of a national database or coordinating body may be beneficial for the industry in Queensland and throughout Australia.
Government Bodies for Traditional Chinese Medicine
There are presently no government bodies for traditional Chinese medicine in Queensland or Brisbane.
National Coordination Body in Brisbane
There have been no recent initiatives from the National Institute of Complementary Medicine in regard to traditional Chinese medicine in Brisbane or Queensland.
Advisory Committees
The Queensland College of Oriental Medicine offers a range of courses and information bulletins on traditional Chinese medicine in Brisbane. The professional and accredited courses include:
- The Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies;
- Advanced Diploma of Acupuncture and Oriental Therapies; and
- Diploma in Equine Acupuncture and Shiatsu.
The Queensland College of Oriental Medicine also offers a range of retreats and professional development programs for students and practitioners.
The Australian Institute of Applied Sciences Natural Medicine School also offers a range of courses and information bulletins on traditional Chinese medicine in Brisbane. The school has a campus in Brisbane and Canberra, with both offering a number of accredited and professional development courses.
The Australian Natural Therapists Association, based in Queensland, also offers a Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage.
Regulation of Herbal Medicines
While traditional Chinese medicine is not regulated in Brisbane or Queensland, herbal medicines that may be used by traditional Chinese medicine are regulated by the Commonwealth Therapeutic Goods Administration.
Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Brisbane
The Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association can provide advice and information on traditional Chinese medicine in Brisbane and Queensland. The association also publishes a professional journal of traditional Chinese medicine techniques, practices, and ingredients.
Recent News
Recent news stories on traditional Chinese medicine in Brisbane have noted the health benefits of herbs and practices associated with traditional Chinese medicine. The University of Queensland recently reported that traditional Chinese medicine was advantageous for the treatment of diabetes and provided a number of other health benefits. Queensland is also hoping to attract greater interest in traditional Chinese medicine given the relatively large Chinese population in Brisbane and the comparative proximity of Queensland to South East Asia.
